Governance: A Workshop for Christian Agencies in the Asia-Pacific Region

Introduction

Micah Network is organising a ‘Workshop on Governance’ for the Asia-Pacific region during April 24 – 28, 2010 at Kathmandu, Nepal. The Workshop is for members of governing bodies/ councils/ boards of Christian agencies in the region, with their CEOs. The aim of this Workshop is: The governance capacity of Christian agencies in the Asia-Pacific region is enhanced to effectively demonstrate biblical stewardship of their vision and mission.

The Workshop is intended for members of governing bodies and CEOs of Christian agencies in the Asia-Pacific region. Registration is open to agencies which send no less than two members (one governing body member and the CEO). Participation of three members from one agency (two governing body members and the CEO) is ideal and encouraged. The Workshop is limited to a maximum of 40 participants.

The purpose of this Workshop is that the governance capacity of Christian agencies in the Asia-Pacific is enhanced to effectively demonstrate biblical stewardship of their vision and mission.

The Workshop intends that by the end of the Workshop, participants will
  • Be exposed to a biblical understanding of governance as unique and apart from corporate governance,
  • Gain an increased understanding of the principles, priorities and processes of governance,
  • Identify challenges they face in governance and
  • Explore options to address challenges, and
  • Fellowship with leaders of Christian agencies in
    • Worship,
    • Prayer and
    • Interaction in and outside of the scheduled programme
The Workshop is divided into twelve sessions*, not exceeding 90 minutes each. These do not include times of worship and biblical reflection of half an hour each morning and the inaugural and closing sessions. Some of the issues to be taken up during the sessions are
  • Governance and accountability: Whose vision is it anyway?
  • Governing for change: strategic decision-making in a fast-changing environment
  • Efficient and effective governance: policy-making
  • Truth, Integrity and Transparency or Total Adequacy in Technique and Technology: The cost of quality
  • The Board Room: Dynamics and communication in governance
  • Governance and the CEO

* The Schedule included at the end of this document is provisional. With a view to enhancing learning, the content, order and titling of sessions may be changed.

The Resource Persons
Jame Lewis is a lawyer and very closely associated with In Good Faith and Associates (IGFA), an Australian company that provides education, resources and consultancy for organisations, professionals and other groups. Jame has run many workshops on governance for countries in Asia and around the world.
Sanjay Patra is the Director of Financial Management Service Foundation (FMSF), a Delhi-based development resource organization involved in the financial management, legal issues and governance of development organizations in South Asia. He is the Chairman of Evangelical Financial Accountability Council, an arm of the Evangelical Fellowship of India. Both Jame and Sanjay are involved in Micah Network’s Governance Project.

The Workshop will seek to meet participant needs primarily through participatory methods such as group discussion and tasks. There will be opportunity for reflection with their colleagues and input sessions from resource persons. The Workshop will be conducted in English only.
